Google's Willow Processor Advances Quantum Computing, Raising Questions About Bitcoin Security
Google's Willow processor achieves a 40-fold reduction in quantum errors, prompting discussions about future cryptography risks for Bitcoin.
Google has achieved a significant milestone in quantum computing by demonstrating a 40-fold reduction in quantum errors using its Willow processor. Published in the scientific journal Science, researchers used a technique called magic state cultivation to produce quantum states with an impressive 99.99% logical fidelity.
While this experiment did not break Bitcoin's encryption, it advances technology that could eventually challenge existing cryptographic systems. Glassnode estimates that approximately 6.04 million BTC have exposed public keys, representing a considerable portion of the mined supply that could theoretically face risks from powerful future quantum computers.
In response to these developments, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase published recommendations for Bitcoin's long-term security, addressing migration challenges, wallet formats, and legacy coins. Protecting the network will require careful planning, coordination among developers, and eventual adoption of post-quantum cryptography before quantum machines reach practical attack capabilities.
Sonuç: Google's quantum breakthrough highlights the growing urgency for the blockchain ecosystem to prepare for future quantum threats, emphasizing the need for proactive security upgrades in the cryptocurrency world.
