Circle's USDC Becomes EU's First Significant E-Money Token Under MiCA

Circle's USDC has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first stablecoin to be classified as a significant e-money token under the European Union's MiCA regulation.

Circle's USDC has officially become the first stablecoin to receive the European Union's significant e-money token classification under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This landmark decision places the dollar-pegged cryptocurrency under the direct supervision of the European Banking Authority (EBA) beginning November 12.

Following an assessment of 45 notified e-money tokens, USDC stood out to meet the criteria established by European regulators. While the EBA will take direct responsibility for supervising reserve assets, liquidity rules, and capital requirements, France's financial regulator, the ACPR, will continue overseeing corporate governance, management suitability, and related internal operations.

This regulatory milestone also coincides with an agreement between European authorities and the New York State Department of Financial Services to enhance cross-border cooperation and information sharing regarding stablecoin activities globally.
